The Sutlers Supreme

Ten Groschen of NAAFI History – Part Three Now Live

Part Three of Ten Groschen of NAAFI History is now live on The Sutlers Supreme.

This instalment explores NAAFI’s work in post-war Austria, tracing how welfare provision supported everyday life across the British Zone between 1945 and the early 1950s. From families arriving under Operation Henpeck, to the transformation of hotels and clubs in Villach and Graz, and even a snowbound canteen high on the Gerlitzen Alpe, the article examines how routine, community, and adaptability shaped service life in occupied Austria.

The piece also includes an interactive map showing known NAAFI and EFI locations across Austria, offering a visual guide to the scale and spread of welfare provision during the occupation years.
