An EFI Soldier's Escape: Pte Leonard Green and the Road to Sweden — Part One
While researching the experiences of Expeditionary Force Institutes personnel during the collapse of France in 1940, I came across the remarkable story of Private Leonard Green, an RASC/EFI serviceman whose wartime journey would eventually carry him from civilian life in London to captivity in occupied Poland.
Drawing upon wartime prisoner-of-war reports, archival records and Leonard's own recollections recorded nearly thirty years later in Escape Route Green, this first part follows his story from enlistment and service with EFI in France through the chaotic retreat towards Boulogne, capture by German forces and arrival at Stalag XXA at Thorn.
Among Leonard's memories was one small but deeply revealing moment:
“It gives your religion. And mine was down as Jewish. That's when I really thought we mightn't have long to go.”
— Leonard Green
